SPEAKER(S)

Luke Yardley
Founder and Ideas Guy |
Yardley Brothers Brewery
Luke moved to Hong Kong from the UK in 2010 for a six-month employment assignment as a purchaser for a wholesale firm. At the end of the term, Luke decided to stay in Hong Kong and took on a role in the education sector.
In 2012, his brother Duncan visited, equipped with barley and yeast from his uncle Simon, who got the brothers interested in homebrewing 20 years ago. With these ingredients, and a visit to HK Brewcraft to buy hops, the brothers brewed the very first batch of Lamma Island IPA in Luke and his wife Ting Ting’s living room. This was the humble beginning of Yardley Brothers Craft Brewery!
Following this successful brew and high demand from friends and Lamma Island tourists, the original Beer Shack was developed as a small stall serving takeaway homebrew to thirsty passers-by.
With increasing customer demand and a passion for crafting the most individually unique beers possible, Luke, Duncan, and Ting Ting took the plunge to open the Kwai Hing-based brewery in 2016. Not finished there, the new and improved, popular social hangout that is The Beer Shack was opened in January 2020, Yardleys Tap room in 2022 and Their new brewery will opne in September 2023.
Ideas and hands-on guy Luke has done every job at the brewery, from new recipe development and brewing to logistics, general maintenance, and customer service.
His most memorable brew was a barrel-aged Chardonnay sour, his first foray into barrel-aging. Fascinated with the interaction between the wine, the wood, and the beer, Luke launched the Yardley Brothers barrel program, which with nearly 70 barrels, is widely regarded as Hong Kong’s most innovative.
Luke’s favourite part of owning a craft brewery is having a creative output to try new things. A food lover, if he wasn’t a brewer, he’d be a chef, as he likes to taste new flavours, experiment with recipes, and come up with weird and wonderful creations.
When he gets downtime from the brewery and being a full-time parent to James (6) and Mia (3), he enjoys cooking for and eating and drinking with friends.
