[Exclusive report from Ming Pao] The new CEO of ANZ Bank, Nuno Matos, who lived in Hong Kong for four years, came to Hong Kong again and said that Hong Kong may surpass Switzerland and become the world's leading wealth management centre in a few years. He also said that every time someone felt that Hong Kong was no longer important, Hong Kong became stronger.

Singapore is far behind Hong Kong

At an event held by the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, former HSBC Wealth Management and Personal Banking Global CEO, Nuno Matos, said that Hong Kong has slowly and steadily become the world's leading treasury management hub. Although Switzerland still ranks first, times have changed. Under global instability and geopolitics, funds continue to flow to Hong Kong and Asia. He described Hong Kong's first place as "maybe only a few years, maybe 2027 or 2028". Although Singapore has joined the competition, it is far behind Hong Kong.

The Treasurer thanked the Australian Chamber of Commerce for supporting RCEP.

Nuno Matos is Portuguese, his wife is Peruvian, and their two sons were born in Spain and Brazil respectively. He joked that Hong Kong is a bit like home, and as it is the ninth place he has been posted to, he has been reluctant to leave and will look for opportunities to come to Hong Kong from time to time. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, who was also present, said that there are currently 160 Australian companies and 10,000 Australian citizens in Hong Kong. Australian companies are involved in the construction and management of the Kai Tak Sports Park, which will surely make Australians proud. He also thanked the Chamber of Commerce for supporting Hong Kong's joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and looked forward to the support of the Australian authorities.
